Daughter of Smoke and Bone

I just finished Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor.  This story is about a strange world.  Chimaera are people and animals combined.l  Angels are at war with Chimaera.

Karou is a girl who doesn’t know much about herself.  She’s traveled most of the world, has gone to many different schools, has two eye tattoos; one on each of her hands, and has been raised by four Chimaera.  Brimstone, her father figure, sends her on all types of errands that she can’t explain to her friends.  I mean, how do you explain collecting teeth?  Karou herself doesn’t even know what the teeth are for.  Karou is rewarded with wishes.  She’s used wishes on things like blue hair and getting back at an ex-boyfriend.

Karou has her normal life and that with her Chimaera family, by being able to travel through portals.  One day the portals are set aflame and Karou has no way of getting in contact with her family.

Karou runs into an angel.  At first her instincts shout enemy, but soon he becomes the key to finding out who she truly is.

The first time I approached this story was through an audiobook.  I couldn’t finish it-the story was really hard to follow.  It was so much better being able to read the story.  I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.  The world is a weird one, yet interesting.  I wish I had a necklace of wishes like Karou.  Throughout the story I was wondering how Karou was involved with the Chimaera and what connection she would have to an angel.  Some parts I felt could have been shortened.  The ending has a very good plot twist.  My prediction of the characters connection was not what happened to be true.  I like when a story can surprise me.  I also found it interesting how the Chimaera are able to keep up against the angels.

I’m interested to see if Karou can find a portal back to her home and how her relationship either grows or falls apart with Akiva-the angel-in the next book.  3.5-4 stars out of 5.

  1. I really liked the wish necklace and enjoyed Karou’s life when she doesn’t fully udnerstand who she is. But I felt like the whole Chimaera history was a bit boring really. I agree that bits of it could have been shortened. Not sure I’ll bother reading the next book
